ABOUT

What happens when a PhD biology professor and a record producer join forces to challenge the conventions of modern rock? You get The Shannon Index—an Alt-Rock band from Montreal blending nu-metal grit, pop sensibility, and prog ambition into a sound that’s as cathartic as it is calculated.

Formed in 2001, the band quickly earned a reputation for their electrifying live performances and unconventional song structures. Their name, borrowed from a measure of biodiversity, reflects their fearless approach to creative experimentation.

At the core of The Shannon Index are frontman Andrew Wieczorek (PhD) and guitarist Derek Orsi (record producer and co-owner of Montreal’s Freq Shop studio). Together, they've crafted a sound inspired by Deftones, At The Drive In, Incubus, and System of a Down—complex, powerful, and unmistakably alive.

Highlights from the early years include opening for I Mother Earth at the 2003 Spin Symposium, two sold-out headline shows at Montreal’s Club Soda, and radio play across North America for their single Denial of Moderation.

After a 22-year hiatus, the band returns in 2025 with renewed energy. Their 2021 single Assessing The Wounds marked the first step back, while Another Two Parter ushers in a bold new chapter, connecting their legacy to an evolved sound.

With roots deep in Montreal’s rock scene, The Shannon Index has reconnected with longtime fans and ignited a new generation of listeners. Their SOLD OUT comeback show at Petit Campus on October 10 marked not just a reunion, but a revival—a testament to the enduring power of their music and the unbreakable bond between band and audience.
