ABOUT
What happens when a PhD biology professor and a record producer join forces to challenge the conventions of modern rock? You get The Shannon Index—an Alt-Rock band blending nu-metal grit, pop sensibility, and prog ambition into a sound that’s as cathartic as it is precise.
Formed in Montreal in 2001, the band quickly earned a reputation for their electrifying live performances and unconventional song structures. Their name—borrowed from a measure of biodiversity—reflects a fearless approach to creative experimentation.
At the core are frontman Andrew Wieczorek (PhD) and guitarist Derek Orsi (record producer and Freq Shop studio owner). Inspired by Deftones, A Perfect Circle, Incubus, and System of a Down, they’ve crafted a sound that’s complex, powerful, and unmistakably alive.
Early highlights include opening for I Mother Earth at the 2003 Spin Symposium, two sold-out shows at Montreal’s Club Soda, and North American radio play for their single Denial of Moderation.
After a 22-year hiatus, the band returns in 2025 with renewed energy. Their 2021 single Assessing The Wounds marked the first step back, while Another Two Parter launches a bold new chapter, bridging their legacy with an evolved sound.
Rooted in the local rock scene, The Shannon Index has reconnected with longtime fans and sparked a new generation of listeners. Their sold-out comeback show at Petit Campus in 2025 was not just a reunion, but a revival and testament to the enduring power of their music.
