Derek Orsi is a Canadian record producer, mixer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, DJ and co-owner of the FREQ SHOP recording studio in Montreal. Born with an unwavering desire to express himself through music, Derek began his formal education at the age of 10, studying classical guitar at the McGill Conservatory of Music. He quickly immersed himself in the world of blues, rock and jazz and went on to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Integrative Music Studies with a minor in Jazz Performance from Concordia University in 2008.

Derek was songwriting and performing as a guitarist during the early 2000s as a member of the Alt-Rock outfit The Shannon Index. The band released a self-titled EP in 2001 and built a strong grassroots following with radio play in the US and Canada. He later joined forces with Funk Rockers Kamikaze Baby and released an EP with the band in 2006 titled “Identity Crisis”. After several Canadian tours, Derek left the band to pursue a career in record production.

Derek opened the Freq Shop recording studio with long time friend Dave Traina in 2011 and has engineered, mixed and produced records for The Damn Truth, We Are Monroe, The Franklin Electric, Mountain Dust, John Jacob Magistery and Vince James. He’s also had the pleasure of working alongside Juno Award winning producer Jean Massicotte and Grammy nominated producer Brandon Friesen in Los Angeles.

He performed for over a decade as an Alt-Pop DJ on the Montreal club scene with residencies at Rouge, B-Side, Garde Manger and Nesta. Derek's unique DJ style also landed him two performances at Osheaga's Artist World.

The true value of knowledge and creativity is best realized when shared. For that reason, Derek enjoys teaching and is currently mentoring students in record production through The Freq Shop Academy and at Recording Arts Canada.

Songwriting and performance have always been Derek's greatest passion. He officially launched his solo career in 2020 and is performing under his given name. His style is a culmination of his many influences and his songwriting includes elements of rock, pop, funk, folk, blues, alternative, classical and electronica.

Music is the language of the soul and Derek unapologetically strives for honesty, integrity and individuality in all his productions.
